Studying in South Korea has always been the top choice for Vietnamese students and graduates, as studying in the Land of the Morning Calm opens up many opportunities for future employment and income.
Based on the experience of TNT Study Abroad, most young people who consider studying in South Korea will have very common questions such as: What are the requirements for studying in South Korea in 2024? What about the costs, scholarships, choosing universities and majors to study in South Korea?
All of these questions are very reasonable, and understanding these concerns, this article will address all the worries so that you can have the necessary experiences and notes for your study abroad journey.
A. Three Reasons to Study Abroad in South Korea
1. Studying in South Korea is quite low in cost
While the cost of studying in European and American countries like the UK, Australia, Canada, etc. can reach 800 – 900 million VND per year, the cost of studying in South Korea is much more affordable, only from 150 million to 220 million VND per year.
With just 150 million VND, you can already study at some of the best universities in South Korea.
2. South Korea has a quality education system and diverse study programs
Education in South Korea with a diverse range of popular majors is considered one of the best education systems in the world. The diverse scholarship system for international students, as well as useful programs for international students to encourage learning and talent development, are also a plus for the South Korean education system.
Therefore, international students will learn a lot of necessary knowledge and skills for their future career development, thanks to the quality education in South Korea.
3. Study and Work in South Korea
International students can study while working part-time in South Korea, and the cost of living in South Korea is much lower compared to the average salary here.
First, you need to convert Vietnamese money to South Korean won: 1,000 won is equivalent to about 20,000 VND (won is the currency unit in South Korea).
Currently, for studying and working part-time in South Korea in 2024, the minimum income for one hour of part-time work for international students in South Korea is 8,590 won (equivalent to about 172,000 VND/hour), about 10 times higher than the income per hour of part-time work in Vietnam.
Part-time jobs under the study and work program in South Korea are encouraged for international students:
- Part-time jobs related to the major of the international student in South Korea
- Simple part-time jobs in restaurants, supermarkets, cafes, etc.
- On-campus jobs: library management, tutoring, participating in research projects, experiments, etc.
- Interpreting/translating, business support, publishing, tour guide jobs, etc.
For university students who study and work part-time, in a week they typically work around 28 hours (4 hours per day). The minimum wage is 172,000 VND per hour, so they can have a minimum monthly income of 20 million VND, which is around 240 million VND per year.
B. What are the Requirements for Studying in South Korea in 2024?
1. Health requirements for studying in South Korea
Health Requirements for Studying in South Korea
Health is one of the three important conditions for successful study abroad in South Korea. If you have one of the two diseases below, you will not be issued a study visa for South Korea:
- Tuberculosis or pulmonary tuberculosis Tuberculosis and pulmonary tuberculosis are contagious diseases that are very easily transmitted through the respiratory system. Therefore, if you unfortunately contract this disease, you will not be granted an entry visa to South Korea. This is to prevent the disease from spreading to the community. You need to treat the disease if you still want to continue studying in South Korea.
However, if you have tuberculosis or pulmonary tuberculosis, you should not be too worried. Nowadays, medicine is very advanced, so treating this disease is no longer a “difficult problem”. Many people have completely recovered from the disease after a period of active treatment. If you are thoroughly treated, you will quickly recover and can realize your study abroad dream shortly after.
- Avian influenza H5N1, H7N9 and other dangerous infectious diseases No further warning is needed about the danger of the H5N1 and H7N9 avian influenza epidemics, as the consequences they can cause may be present in the alarming number of fatalities due to these diseases, reaching thousands of people in many countries around the world.
Therefore, those infected with these diseases will not be allowed to enter South Korea to prevent the outbreak from spreading and causing an uncontrollable situation in terms of medical care and health for the local population. Not only South Korea, but other countries also prohibit cases infected with these dangerous diseases in order to ensure the utmost safety for their citizens.
- Can you study in South Korea with hepatitis B? Hepatitis B is also a contagious disease. However, due to the relatively low degree of danger, if you have hepatitis B, you can still study in South Korea. Similarly, some other infectious diseases such as syphilis, gonorrhea… are still allowed to enter South Korea.
However, currently, some universities and colleges in South Korea have set quite strict requirements on health conditions when admitting students. Therefore, to avoid being rejected for a visa unexpectedly, you should undergo regular health check-ups so that you can detect and treat any of the above-mentioned infectious diseases in time. In addition, you should also find out the health requirements of the school you plan to attend to be best prepared
2. Conditions related to criminal records
This is a matter that has become increasingly stringent in South Korea, where a clean criminal record is now a strict requirement.
3. Conditions for immigration and personal background
Applicants for studying abroad in South Korea must not be individuals prohibited from leaving Vietnam or entering South Korea. They should not have any relatives (in the household registration book) who have been or are currently residing illegally in South Korea.
4. Financial proof and income requirements for the guarantor
To prove financial capability for studying abroad, you will need three basic types of documents: savings certificate, income proof, and a financial guarantee letter. Additionally, if you have valuable assets such as a car or real estate, providing these documents can enhance your chances of obtaining a South Korean student visa.
- Savings Certificate
Note that the name on the savings certificate must be either your own, your parents’, or a guardian’s (in case of parental death).
- For English language study: The savings certificate must show at least $10,000, deposited in the bank for a minimum of 6 months up to the date of the visa application.
- For associate/bachelor/master/PhD studies: The savings certificate must show at least $20,000, deposited in the bank for a minimum of 3 months up to the date of the visa application.
- Monthly Income Proof
You need to prove that the guarantor has a monthly income of at least 30 million VND. This income must be clear and transparent, which can be shown through a transparent income certificate. How to prove income?
To prove income, include the following documents in your South Korean student visa application:
- Employment contract
- Recent 3 months’ salary slips if the guarantor is a state employee or a salaried worker
- Company account statements if the guarantor is a business owner
- Financial Guarantee Letter
The student must have a financial guarantee letter from the guarantor, usually a parent. If the parents are deceased, a close relative (such as grandparents, siblings, or other relatives listed in the household registration book) will act as the guarantor.
Additionally, the financial guarantee letter must be authenticated by local authorities to be valid. This shows that the financial guarantee is a key requirement for the visa application.
5. Visa interview conditions with the Embassy
In the past 6 months, you must not have failed a visa interview with the Embassy (http://overseas.mofa.go.kr/vn-vi/) (you can only reapply after 6 months from the date of the previous rejection).
